The Muzo region of Colombia has produced the world's finest emeralds for over 500 years. Spanish conquistadors called them "Green Fire" and fought wars to control the mines.
Indigenous Muzo people considered emeralds sacred, using them in ceremonies and burying them with their ancestors. When Spanish colonizers arrived in 1537, they enslaved indigenous miners and extracted millions in emeralds.
During colonial revolts and wars, Spanish miners hid emerald caches to protect them from indigenous uprisings and rival colonizers. Many were never recovered.
Today, the Muzo mines continue to produce legendary gems. Local communities now control mining operations, and Key Masters partners with them to hunt for lost Spanish caches and indigenous artifacts.
